Overview:

This market research report and update by IGI Consulting forecasts the market for optical components to be flat or decreasing for 2001 but will pick up its growth in 2002. Even though most aspects of the market are showing little or no growth, photonics automation and integrated optics are still showing growth. The reason is that during the period of phenomenal growth it became apparent that the industry could not ramp up production to meet demand. Investors and new start-ups are moving in to fill this need in the areas of photonics automation and integrated optics. Both are solutions to the problem but come at it from different directions.

The DWDM components business is still in its infancy. It starts from a long historical base of optics including lenses, filters, gratings, etc., which have been developed over the past 100 years. Now coming into the market are new component technologies such as Fiber Bragg gratings, graded index lenses, planar waveguide integrated circuits, and arrayed waveguide gratings (AWG). New technological life is also being breathed into older technologies such as filters by new coating technologies. All this adds up to a fertile environment for new technology and new devices to be introduced by innovative small companies.

There are so many optical components used in a DWDM system and a number of different technologies can be used to produce the same result that the number of companies claiming to have a WDM product is large. This report forecasts the market for each major component and provides profiles of companies claiming to have WDM products.
